Knitting Tip
Ravelry

Have you joined Ravelry yet?  I highly recommend this-it will open up your knitting world.

You will find out what your fellow knitters are making. This is the "Tilted Duster" from the fall 2007 Interweave Knits. The magazine is sold out but you can order the pattern online. Currently there are 384 people on Ravelry making this. You can see the finished pictures, the yarns they used and read any comments they made while knitting it.

Wow, 2008 is here.  It is hard to believe that another year has flown by.

I am off to Long Beach on Thursday to see the new yarns for spring.  I will be seeing the new Berroco (already ordered and should be in stock in a couple of weeks), Rowan (this will be a surprise to me), Noro sock yarns (again ordered and should be here in February), Blue Sky Alpacas, Debbie Bliss, new books and accessories and maybe some surprises.

Just a reminder that the store is open again on Mondays.

I mentioned in a previous newsletter that we are talking with Joan Kass about some lace workshops.  We are hoping to do this in March-better weather for driving.  Details will follow.

Gone Stitchin'

Thursday, October 2-Sunday, October 5, 2008

We are now taking registrations for the weekend.  Our instructors will be Barry Klein from Trendsetter Yarns and Fiona Ellis.

Barry's Classes
Friday afternoon and Saturday morning-Advanced Design Techniques (If you want to get more advanced this class is for you. We will work with real bodies, real size, real gauge, and real designs. This class will open your mind like never before.)

Saturday afternoon-Complete from the Neck Down (Cast on and create a miniature sweater from the top down while learning about body style, measurements, the mathematics behind the knitting, and putting it all together.)

Sunday morning-Ruffles.  This is a new class that Barry is working on.  You will be working with one of his new yarns to create ruffles.  Three different options will be available for the class.  This technique will be taught on a scarf but can be used on garments.
This picture is just a sneak peek at the technique-we will have more pictures at the end of January.

Fiona's Classes

Friday Afternoon-Experiment with Colour and Fair Isle

Advanced beginner - advanced level.  Working with colour can be so much fun! And dreaming up your own colour story is very rewarding. In this workshop we will look at colour theory and apply it to knitting. There will be time to experiment by yourself to see what happens when you introduce a new colour palette to a tried and tested pattern. For students who are unsure of how to work the Fair Isle method instruction will be given.

Saturday Morning-Morphing Cables

Intermediate - advanced level.  Fiona is famous for her morphing cables-cables that change and become other patterns. In this workshop she will show you the basic principles of how to get started designing your own cables. Even if you are not an advanced cable knitter, give it a try. Simple patterns can morph and create unique ideas. If you love cables but find working vertical patterns too repetitive and want to heighten the challenge, this workshop is a must!

Saturday Afternoon-Short Rows for Shaping and Beyond

Intermediate - advanced level.  Want to knit 'round corners with confidence? In this workshop Fiona will show you how to work the short-row method for shoulder and bust dart shaping. Then she will show you how to use the technique as a tool for designing stunning patterns not just for shaping silhouettes.

Sunday Morning-Celtic Cables

Intermediate to advanced.  When knitting cables based on Celtic patterns there are some techniques that you may not use in regular rope cables. While you knit a sample to try them out, Fiona will demo the techniques, show you how to read the charts- including looking at the symbols used, and for the more advanced cable knitter discuss how you might modify patterns to make them your own. With an understanding of what is taking place when cabling you will be better able to follow a pattern or fix any mistakes as they arise (which never happens right?)

Knitting a garment that has a lace pattern
I had a customer in today having problems with her knitting.  She is doing a cardigan with lace work.  There is a chart showing the pattern.  The problem with the chart is that all four sizes of the cardigan are on it.  There are times when the decrease for the lace is within her size but the increase is outside her size.  She was finishing the row and ending up with the wrong number of stitches.
The most important thing to remember is that you can't do an increase (maybe a yarn over) without a decrease (maybe a knit two together) or a decrease without an increase.
